Sustainability
Sustainability and resiliency measures are central to the design, construction, and ongoing management of Domino Park.
- X
A combination of active and passive areas, informed through community outreach, provide much needed public space to the park-starved neighborhood.
- X
43% of the park is vegetated, including many resilient and native plant species, reducing the amount of stormwater runoff.
- X
Two design features allow for a stronger connection to the water: The Viewing Steps bring park visitors closer to the water; And, the Pier Reveal allows light and air to the East River below.
- X
The bulkhead and relieving platform are rehabilitated and raised above the 100-year floodplain, reducing the risk of flooding.
- X
Many materials and artifacts are reclaimed from the site and reincorporated into the park, including wood from the refinery, the columns that make up the elevated walk, and large syrup tanks installed in the landscape.
- X
The park landscape is managed 100% organically, without the use of pesticides or herbicides.
- X
Plant material and debris from the park is composted and redistributed back into the plant beds.
- X
LED fixtures throughout the park limit light pollution and reduce energy consumption.
- X
The central water feature includes a comprehensive pump and retention system that uses recirculating UV filtered water.
